Long Island

Long Island is typically know as having two counties, Nassau County and Suffolk County. It also includes Kings and Queens counties (the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Nassau is adjacent to Queens to the West, and Suffolk makes up the Eastern two thirds of the island.

Long Island also has some separate islands that are part of it. Shelter Island which is located between the North and South Forks, as well as barrier islands like Fire Island.

Suffolk County is made up of 10 towns, Babylon, Brookhaven, East Hampton, Huntington, Islip, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Smithtown, Southampton and Southold. There are also 32 villages and 127 hamlets or “towns”. Suffolk County is known for its parks and beaches. It also has great shopping and dining options as well as many wineries. Suffolk County is also home to The Hamptons, located on the East end of Long Island. This is a happening Summer hangout for celebrities and socialites.

Villages typically provide services and amenities exclusive to village residents, things like special parking at the train station, or village beaches or parks. Some villages also have their own police departments. A example would be the Village of Garden City, located in the hamlet “town” of Garden City that is in the Town of Hempstead.
